"Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor? ... Jesus said, 'Leave her alone, so that she may keep it for the day of my burial." — John 12:5-7

Wednesday of Holy Week is traditionally recognized as the "Silent Day," a designation that carries profound significance within the context of the Passion narrative. This day stands out as a moment of stillness and reflection, devoid of the public teachings that typically characterize the activities surrounding the Temple. Unlike the previous days, filled with the clamor of crowds and the fervor of public discourse, Wednesday marks a remarkable shift in energy and focus. With that in mind, let's shift our focus today to an event that happened earlier during this high-energy and spiritually active week.

The bustling city atmosphere gives way to a more intimate setting as attention turns inward to a private home in Bethany. Here, a pivotal event unfolds: a woman named Mary, often identified as Mary of Bethany, takes an alabaster jar filled with precious ointment, an act that is both simple and deeply symbolic. The breaking open of this expensive jar to anoint Jesus not only signifies a profound act of devotion but also heralds a significant transition from the public rituals of the Temple to a more personal and private resonance. This moment of anointing is rich in meaning, as it foreshadows Jesus' impending sacrifice and highlights the deep connection between the sacred and the everyday.

If Monday was characterized by the theme of breaking the Box, symbolizing the dismantling of old constraints and limitations, and Tuesday was focused on discovering the Frequency, which represents the alignment of one’s spirit with divine purpose, then Wednesday invites us to delve into the concept of your Toolbox. This day encourages us to explore the unconventional elements and spiritual practices we utilize to prepare our hearts and minds for a breakthrough. It emphasizes the importance of recognizing and using the tools at our disposal, whether prayer, meditation, acts of kindness, or moments of solitude. These tools serve as conduits for transformation, allowing us to connect more deeply with our inner selves and with the divine.

Furthermore, it is crucial to understand that the effectiveness of these tools is not merely in their physical form but in the Holy Intent behind them. The sacredness of our actions is imbued with the intention we bring to them, making even the simplest acts resonate with profound significance. Thus, Wednesday serves as a reminder that in our spiritual journeys, it is not only the grand gestures that matter but also the quiet, intentional acts of love and devotion that prepare us for the breakthroughs we seek.

The Root of the Offering: Heart over Protocol

To truly understand the complexities behind why certain tools and offerings are embraced while others are cast aside, we must delve deep into the earliest recorded offerings in human history: the story of Cain and Abel. This narrative serves not only as a historical account but also as a profound lesson about the essence of giving and the underlying motivations that drive our actions.

In the biblical account, Cain, the elder brother, adhered strictly to the established protocol of his labor. He brought forth an offering derived from the fruits of the ground, which, on the surface, seemed to fulfill the religious requirements of the time—a "correct" religious act according to the customs and expectations of his society. Yet, despite his adherence to these protocols, the Divine did not regard his offering favorably. This pivotal moment illustrates a critical truth: the Divine's gaze was not fixed upon the tangible fruits of Cain's labor; rather, it was directed towards the frequency and condition of Cain’s heart. The underlying message here is that outward compliance with ritualistic norms does not guarantee acceptance; it is the inner spirit that ultimately matters.

In stark contrast, we have Abel, the younger brother, who approached the act of offering with an entirely different mindset. A spirit of pure devotion and heartfelt sincerity characterized Abel's gift. He offered the best of his flock, not merely as a ritualistic obligation but as an expression of genuine love and reverence. The distinction between the two brothers lies not in the stuff they brought to the altar but rather in the Intent that accompanied their offerings. Abel's offering was infused with a deep sense of gratitude and connection to the Divine, while Cain's was devoid of such heartfelt significance.

Throughout history, we observe a consistent pattern: the Spirit has rejected the "perfect" ritual when it is presented without a sincere heart. Conversely, it has embraced the "unconventional" gift when offered with pure intention and genuine love. This principle serves as the foundation of what can be termed the Divine Toolbox: the giver's vibration is the only thing that sanctifies the gift. It is a reminder that the essence of an offering transcends its material value; it is the emotional and spiritual energy behind the gesture that determines its worth in the eyes of the Divine.

This principle invites us to reflect on our own lives and the motivations behind our actions. Are we engaging in rituals and offerings merely out of obligation, or are we infusing them with our true selves? In a world often driven by external appearances and societal expectations, the story of Cain and Abel challenges us to prioritize authenticity and heartfelt intention over mere compliance with established norms. It encourages us to cultivate a deeper connection with our offerings, ensuring they resonate with our true essence and transform into sacred acts of devotion.

The Ancient Precedent: Sacred Tools of the Greats

Many who sit in modern pews are taught to fear "unconventional" tools—crystals, oils, or symbolic cards—labeling them as "taboo." However, the very foundations of our faith are built upon physical elements used to bridge the gap between the human and the Divine. The "Founding Fathers" of our faith were Master Craftsmen of the spirit who understood that the Divine often speaks through the material:

  • The Urim and Thummim (The Sacred Stones): Kept within the High Priest’s breastplate, these two stones were used to cast lots to discern the direct "Yes" or "No" of God. These stones were a physical method of divination authorized by the Creator to provide leaders with clear direction in times of crisis.

  • King David & The Ephod: When David needed to know if he should pursue his enemies, he didn't just sit in a silent room; he called for the Ephod (1 Samuel 30:7). This was a physical, priestly garment embedded with stones and symbols. David used this "tool" as a portal to hear the Divine voice. He understood that a physical anchor could help tune his frequency to the station of Truth.

  • Moses & The Bronze Serpent: The same man who received the commandment against "graven images" was commanded by God to forge a bronze serpent on a staff. By simply gazing at this physical object, Moses could heal the people. It was a physical anchor for a miraculous frequency.

  • Solomon’s Temple: A masterpiece of "taboo" imagery—massive bronze pillars, twelve bronze oxen, and intricate carvings. God did not reject these tools; He inhabited the space they created because they were built with Holy Wisdom.

These weren't "magical" objects in a dark sense; they were divinely authorized catalysts for spiritual focus. Rather than invoking sinister forces or engaging in malevolent practices, these objects served a higher purpose, acting as conduits for divine energy and inspiration.

Breaking the Performance: The Alabaster Jar

When Mary approached Jesus with her alabaster jar filled with pure nard, she was not merely offering a physical gift; she was stepping into a profound and ancient lineage of "Abel Offerings." This lineage, steeped in the rich history of sacrificial acts of devotion, symbolizes a deep and personal connection to the divine. Unlike the formalized rituals of the Temple, where the people and Priests made offerings using prescribed tools and methods, Mary chose to bring forth what was both precious and intimately familiar to her. The alabaster jar was not just a container; it represented her love, her sacrifice, and her willingness to break free from societal norms to express her faith authentically.

Breaking the jar was a moment of radical vulnerability. It was a declaration that transcended the constraints of the religious establishment. In the eyes of the "religious box," Mary’s actions were deemed scandalous and irreverent. The critics—the “middlemen” who often act as gatekeepers of faith—wanted to control how she expressed her devotion. They sought to impose their standards, wanting to put a price tag on her spirit, labeling her methods "wasteful" and "extravagant". Their judgment was rooted in a fear of losing control over the narrative of worship, a narrative that often prioritizes ritual over genuine connection.

However, Mary understood the profound truth encapsulated in the Toolbox's secret: The tool is neutral, but the Intent is Holy. This principle highlights that the value of an offering lies not in its form or the method of presentation, but rather in the intention behind it. Mary’s act was not about the monetary value of the nard but about the depth of her love and devotion to Jesus. She recognized that her offering was a sacred expression of her faith, one that the standards of men could not quantify.

As she broke the jar, the rich, intoxicating fragrance of the nard filled the room, enveloping everyone present in its divine aroma. This moment was not just a sensory experience; it served as a catalyst that triggered the "Ego of the Institution," represented by Judas, to rise and judge her actions. Judas, driven by his own motives and a misunderstanding of true devotion, criticized her for what he perceived as a waste of resources. However, Jesus, in that profound moment, defended Mary. He recognized that her frequency—the purity and authenticity of her worship—outranked their rigid protocol and expectations. In defending her, Jesus highlighted a fundamental truth about the nature of worship: that it is not confined to the structures and systems created by humanity but rather is a deeply personal and spiritual act that can take many forms.

Mary's act of breaking the alabaster jar became a powerful symbol of liberation from the constraints of institutionalized religion, reminding those present that true devotion often defies conventional wisdom and societal norms. Her willingness to embrace vulnerability and sacrifice became a timeless lesson about the nature of faith and love, and about the importance of honoring one's personal relationship with the divine.

Reclaiming Your Sacred Tools

When we bring these ideas together, we find a liberating truth: Your "Alabaster Jar" is whatever allows you to pour out your heart in pure intention. This concept encourages us to explore the various tools and practices that resonate with our spiritual journey, enabling us to connect more deeply with our inner selves and the Divine. Each individual’s path is unique, and thus, the tools we choose to embrace can vary widely, reflecting our personal experiences and beliefs.

  • If a crystal helps you ground your energy to speak with the Father, to express your thoughts and feelings authentically in prayer or meditation, then by all means, use it. Crystals like amethyst or clear quartz can amplify your intentions and create a sacred space for communication. The vibrational frequencies of these stones can enhance your focus and clarity, allowing you to connect more profoundly with your spiritual practice.

  • If anointing oils shift the atmosphere of your home for prayer, creating an inviting and sacred environment, embrace their use. Essential oils infused with spiritual significance can transform a mundane space into a sanctuary. Whether it’s lavender for peace or frankincense for spiritual elevation, these oils can serve as powerful allies in your quest for divine connection, helping to set the tone for your spiritual rituals.

  • If symbolic cards or journals help you decode the "Urim and Thummim" of your intuition, guiding your decision-making and self-reflection, use them fully. Journaling can be a profound way to articulate your thoughts and feelings, while cards can serve as prompts for contemplation, helping you tap into your subconscious and divine guidance. These tools can facilitate a deeper understanding of your spiritual path and illuminate the lessons you are meant to learn.

The "taboo" is often an artificial label used to maintain a monopoly on the Divine. It is crucial to recognize that throughout history, many sacred practices and tools have been marginalized or dismissed by those who seek to control spiritual narratives. However, from the Bronze Serpent of Moses to the Alabaster Jar of Mary, the message is clear:

If it prepares your heart for the Law of Love, it belongs in your toolbox.

This principle underscores the importance of personal discernment in your spiritual journey.

Don’t let the critics tell you your "jar" is too strange or unconventional. Every tool that leads you to a deeper understanding of the Source and enriches your connection to the Divine is invaluable. It is precisely this diversity of practices and beliefs that enriches the tapestry of spirituality, allowing for a more inclusive and expansive experience of the Divine.

Ultimately, reclaiming your sacred tools means embracing what resonates with your spirit and empowers you on your journey. It invites you to explore, experiment, and find what truly nourishes your soul. In a world that often seeks to categorize and limit, your personal "Alabaster Jar" serves as a reminder that the path to the Divine is as unique as each individual is, and that it is through our authenticity and openness that we can truly connect with the essence of Love.

The 'Unveiled Source' series continues tomorrow. We move to Thursday—The Day of the Mandate. We will sit at the table for the Last Supper and witness the ultimate "Ego Death" as we embrace The Law of Love.
