While Alice in Wonderland has long been a foundational fairy tale, the fractured psychological depth of its darker reimaginings—echoing the haunting aesthetic of American McGee’s Alice—truly commands my imagination. Created in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, in July 2012, this piece represents one of my most intricate and labor-intensive conceptual composites, requiring meticulous structural planning to dissolve the boundary between conscious reality and the subconscious mind.
Beneath an overcast sky woven from an illusion of suspended pocket watches, the woodland canopy sheds its natural foliage, replaced entirely by cascading playing cards. Resting in undisturbed slumber beneath the twisted branches, my daughter Faith drifts in tranquil vulnerability while the shadowy, enigmatic presence of the Mad Hatter keeps a quiet, watchful vigil over her descent into the dream world.
